What Happens After You Click "Apply"

Ever wondered where your CV goes after you hit submit? We trace the journey from upload to inbox—and explain why you never heard back.

## The Black Hole Explained You spent two hours tailoring your CV. You clicked "Apply." Then silence. For weeks. Forever. Here is what actually happened. ## Stage 1: The Upload (0-5 seconds) Your CV file enters the ATS. The system: - Logs your submission timestamp - Assigns you a candidate ID - Begins parsing your document If you uploaded a PDF with complex formatting, parsing may fail. Your profile may show blank fields. ## Stage 2: The Parse (5-30 seconds) The ATS extracts text and maps it: - **Name** → Candidate Name field - **Email** → Contact field - **Experience** → Work History section - **Education** → Education section - **Skills** → Skills/Keywords section Anything it cannot map goes into "Other" or is discarded. ## Stage 3: The Score (30-60 seconds) The ATS compares your parsed profile against the job description. It generates a match score, typically 0-100%. Candidates scoring below the threshold (often 70%) may never be seen by a human. ## Stage 4: The Queue (Hours to Days) High-scoring candidates enter the recruiter's review queue. But recruiters are busy. A role may attract 200+ applications. Even top scorers wait. ## Stage 5: The Human (If You Are Lucky) A recruiter opens your parsed profile. They spend an average of 6-7 seconds on initial review. If nothing catches their eye, you are rejected. Only then—if interested—do they open your actual CV file. ## Why You Never Heard Back Common reasons for silence: 1. **Parsing failure** — Your CV was garbled; the recruiter never saw it 2. **Low match score** — You ranked below the threshold 3. **High competition** — 50 candidates scored higher 4. **Role cancelled** — The hiring manager changed their mind 5. **Recruiter overload** — They simply ran out of time None of these are personal. Most are systemic. ## What You Can Control - Format your CV for parsing success - Use keywords from the job description - Apply early (newer applications sometimes rank higher) - Follow up after 1-2 weeks if you have a contact ## Pre-Flight Checklist Before your next application: - [ ] Is your CV saved as `.docx` or simple PDF? - [ ] Have you tested it in a free ATS simulator? - [ ] Does your Skills section mirror the job requirements? - [ ] Have you applied within the first week of the posting? --- *For more on career strategy, explore our [Career Strategy](/career-strategy) insights.*
